Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco CA
1225 PM PST Thu Jan 2 2025
...New SYNOPSIS, SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, BEACHES...
.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 1219 PM PST Thu Jan 2 2025
Widespread light rain starting late tonight for the North Bay
spreading across much of the region on Friday. Conditions dry out
for the weekend and into the upcoming workweek.
&&
.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Friday)
Issued at 1219 PM PST Thu Jan 2 2025
An approaching cold front will move through the North Bay late
tonight (potentially after midnight) and then move southward across
the Bay Area and Central Coast on Friday. Rainfall amounts will
generally be beneficial, yet will likely see rises on creeks and
streams in the North Bay. It is across the North Bay where we are
expected to see the heaviest of rainfall with 0.30"-0.60" in the
valleys and up to 1.00" in the coastal ranges and higher elevations
across the region. As you head southward, forecast rainfall amounts
drastically taper lower with 0.30" for the City of San Francisco to
less than 0.10" for Monterey. However, locally greater totals are
expected in the favored coastal ranges from the Santa Cruz Mountains
to the Santa Lucia Range. Winds are not forecast to be much of an
issue, but with saturated soils it does not take much to bring down
weak trees and branches. Coastal areas could see gusts up to 20-30
mph with the higher terrain seeing up to 40 mph ahead of and along
the frontal passage.
&&
.LONG TERM...
(Friday night through next Wednesday)
Issued at 1219 PM PST Thu Jan 2 2025
Drier conditions return for the remainder of the weekend and will
likely continue through next week. High pressure will gradually
build over the region through this timeframe with widespread lower
60`s by Sunday and warming up to the lower 70`s across the Central
Coast by Thursday. This matches the CPC`s 6-10 and 8-14 day outlook
of temperatures likely above normal and precipitation likely below
normal for this time of year.
&&
.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 928 AM PST Thu Jan 2 2025
Currently VFR at all TAF sites. An incoming cold front will bring
southerly winds and rainfall to the region by early Friday
morning. Prevailing ceilings and visibilities are expected to
remain in the MVFR realm through the cold frontal passage.
Vicinity of SFO...Currently VFR with easterly flow. Winds will
become southerly ahead of the cold front and westerly behind it.
An initial push of rainfall is expected mid-morning Friday with a
secondary push of rainfall expected Friday afternoon with rain
showers likely in between.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Currently VFR and calm at MRY and VFR
with drainage flow at SNS. As the cold front approaches mid-
morning tomorrow, winds will become southerly and rain showers
will become likely towards the end of the TAF period.
&&
.MARINE...
(Today through Tuesday)
Issued at 816 AM PST Thu Jan 2 2025
Light winds and moderate seas will prevail today. An incoming cold
front will bring moderate southerly winds and widespread light
rainfall Friday. Incoming moderate period westerly swell and rough
seas will create hazardous conditions Friday and into next week.
&&
.BEACHES...
Issued at 1219 PM PST Thu Jan 2 2025
Wave model forecasts indicate long period westerly swell arriving
along the coastline from Sonoma County to Monterey County Friday
night, decreasing to a moderate period westerly swell Saturday. We
have issued a Beach Hazard Statement from 9 AM Friday to 9 PM
Friday due to increased risk for sneaker waves. Then, High Surf
Advisory from 9 PM Friday to 3 AM Sunday due to breaking waves of
18-25 feet (all coastal locations expect the northern Monterey Bay
which will remain in a Beach Hazard Statement).
Also at the current time, wave model forecasts are showing a newly
arriving long period westerly swell Monday into Tuesday. As always
whenever there is increasing surf - remember to never turn your back
on the ocean and stay out of the water. Again please stay tuned to any
further updates for late week, additionally for early next week.
